Event Preview

The final Triple Crown race of 2025 is set for Saturday, June 7, as the Belmont Stakes is contested at Saratoga. This race will be run over a distance of a mile and two furlongs, and there is a fascinating outlook to the contest with the first three from the Kentucky Derby all involved.

Sovereignty was an excellent winner at Churchill Downs in early May for trainer William Mott, but there were mixed responses after connections opted against running in the Preakness. But, the strength of the Derby run was reflected after Journalism landed success at Pimlico despite encountering issues.

Journalism was bumped in the home stretch at Pimlico, but made up four lengths in dazzling fashion to beat Gosger by just under a length. Umberto Rispoli will be back aboard, but it could be argued that the jockey’s mistakes are holding the three-year-old back in of what he can actually achieve on track.

Hill Road is following the tried and tested route to the Belmont Stakes, winning the G3 Peter Pan last time out, just as Arcangelo did a few years ago. However, the Chad Brown runner still has questions to answer, and whether he will stay this extended trip remains to be seen.

Bob Baffert’s runners always deserve a lot of respect, and Rodriguez shouldn’t be underestimated after getting back on track when winning the G2 Wood Memorial in April. However, he does have eleven lengths to find on Journalism based on the form of the G1 Santa Anita Derby.

Belmont Stakes Picks

Another quick turnaround does pose more questions of Journalism, while Sovereignty had the measure over a number of rivals in the Derby. However, Baeza was the eye-catcher at Churchill Downs after overcoming traffic issues and edging right in the final stages to finish within two lengths of the winner.

He is also closely matched with Journalism based on the Santa Anita Derby run, and with extra recovery time before this start at Saratoga, he could be the value play at the odds available.
