Event Preview
A pulsating opening game in the Stanley Cup Finals was staged in Edmonton on Wednesday, as the Oilers came back from the brink to the victory after scoring the winner in overtime.
Not for the first time, Leon Draisaitl was the man for the big moment, scoring twice, which included the overtime winner. It marks an excellent return to form for the star, who failed to score in all seven games in the Stanley Cup Finals in 2024.
It remains to be seen how crucial the turnaround will be in the context of the series, but it does mean that the Oilers have done something that they failed to do last year- have a lead to defend.

There will be a sense of what could have been for the Panthers following the defeat. Florida had led 3-1 in the second period, before crumbling at Rogers Place. Sam Bennett continued his excellent record on the road in the post-season, scoring twice to make Panthers history.
The defeat also made some unwanted history, as it was the first time in 32 playoff games under Paul Maurice that the Panthers had squandered a two-goal advantage t lose.
A more damning trend for the Panthers could be the fact that 65 of the past 80 tams to win Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals have gone on to win the major NHL honor.

Heading to Florida, 2-0 down in the series will be a major worry for Maurice and his Panthers side, as there will be a long way back.
The Panthers did show enough in the opening two periods that they have the offensive quality to get the better of the Oilers, but holding their nerve will be the big concern. We could see the series being level as it moves to Florida, as the Panthers could right the wrongs from Game One on Friday.
