Event Preview
Two Grand Slam champions collide at an early stage of the French Open this weekend, as only one of Jelena Ostapenko and Elena Rybakina will reach the fourth round at Roland Garros. Ostapenko may hold the narrow advantage, as she is a former champion at the French Open.
However, she has been pushed to her limit on clay already this year, needing all three sets to overcome unseeded opponents in each of the opening two rounds. In the second round, she bounced back from a set down to overcome American player Carolina Dolehide. The Latvian ed an impressive four aces, but she also recorded a worrying seven double faults.

Those errors will need to be kept to a minimum against Elena Rybakina on Friday, as the 25-year-old appears to be growing in confidence as the tournament progresses. She was excellent on her latest outing after beating American Iva Jovic in straight sets. Rybakina won 70% of the points on the first serve, and converted on four of ten break point opportunities.
While she doesn’t yet have a French Open title to her name, Rybakina has won 72% of her matches at Roland Garros. Furthermore, she has reached at least the quarterfinal stage in two of the last four years. Her consistency in Grand Slams also deserves respect, as the 25-year-old has reached at least the last eight in four majors since winning Wimbledon in 2022.
Head-to-Head Record
This will be the sixth meeting between the stars since 2019, with Rybakina holding the narrow 3-2 advantage. Rybakina also won the only previous encounter between the rivals on the clay. Overall, she has also won each of the last three head-to-head meetings.
Elena Rybakina vs. Jelena Ostapenko Picks
One of the fan favorites could exit the competition in the third round on Friday, as it is hard to foresee Ostapenko overcoming Rybakina based on the number of errors that she has been making in the previous two rounds. However, we could see a three-set thriller being played out between these two talented players.
